Jigsaw
Key Idea: What was life like for civilians during WWII? How did technology affect the way people lived their lives?
For this activity students will be divided into groups and each group will be assigned one of the sources below. Students will be given about twenty minutes to read/watch their assigned material and become experts on it. Once the students have mastered their own content, the groups will be broken down, and the students will be placed in new groups with students who read different materials. Each student will then proceed to teach their new group about what they read/watched
This activity relates to the NCSS Thematic Strand 8 (Science, Technology, and Society). This strand focuses on how developments in technology have impacted society, such as airplanes and new weaponry. It also examines the consequences of this new technology and its positive/negative effects. While some of these sources discuss topics such as book burning and everyday life, some are focused on the bombing of civilians and military areas by airplanes. Bombing civilians was an unfortunate but popular strategy during WWII that affected the lives of many Europeans. Along with the NCSS strand, the activity also relates to the standards listed below...
MWH-7.1 Analyze the relative importance of economic and political rivalries, ethnic and ideological conflicts, social class, militarism, and imperialism as underlying causes of World War I and World War II, including the role of nationalism and propaganda in mobilizing civilian populations around the world to support the two world wars.
MWH-7.2 Analyze the ways that the responses of the governments of Britain, France, Germany, and Italy to the economic and political challenges of the 1920s and 1930s contributed to the renewal of international hostilities in the years leading to World War II.
